WRU Considering New Region

Wales

The head of the Welsh Rugby Union has announced that they are actively looking at plans to establish a fifth Welsh rugby region.  For those of you who can’t remember back that far, there once was  fifth Welsh rugby region - the Celtic Warriors, who were based in South Wales, they were axed by the WRU in 2004 in a very controversial move that annoyed a lot of supporters and fans, not just of the Celtic Warriors, but fans of teams that weren’t axed.

It is thought that this region would be more of a development side for younger Welsh Players to get as much experience as possible at a high level.

Warren Gatland has said that he would like another regional team in Wales, as it would offer him more potential players to pick.  the players he has to choose form are rather limited - as he pointed out to some New Zealand coaches when he went to visit:’Imagine only having four Super 14 teams and seven of the players in each team being foreigners. That’s what I have got to select the Welsh team from.’  Not the easiest of tasks!
