Leicester Sign New Backs Coach
Leicester Tigers have signed Matt O’Connor as their new backs coach. O’Connor, who is 37 and Australian, previously coached ACT Brumbies (a Super 14 side) and Australia A as well. He played for the Brumbies as a center for a while, but has also played in Japan and for a while changed codes to rugby league.
O’Connor joins Heyneke Meyer, who is the newly appointed head coach of Leicester in building up a team that will be able to compete at the highest levels - Leicester lost the final of the Guinness Premiership. Remember, Leicester only recently fired Marcelo Loffreda, the Argentinean coach, after he failed to win the Premiership last year, so it looks like they have installed a complete new coaching team in the hopes that that will bring more success to the club.
Fun fact for you, Leicester hold the record for highest score in both the Heineken Cup ( a 90-19 demolition of Glasgow in 1997) and Guinness Premiership (83-10 defeat of Newcastle Falcons in 2005). I wonder if Newcastle will suffer a score as bad as that in the upcoming season - I am guessing that it may get quite close at some point.
