Boris Johnson Wants Rugby On His Door

Boris Johnson, the London mayor, wants London to be involved in hosting the 2015 world cup. This has happened before, where England jointly hosted the event in 1991 with Scotland, Ireland, France and Wales. There are a lot of other countries also interested in hosting the world cup, including Japan, Australia, Ireland, Italy, Scotland, Wales and South Africa.

It is well known that the last time that England shared hosting with the other home nations, it was a logistical nightmare, with games spread out over 5 countries, and while the stadiums were not spread out as much as they could have been if say New Zealand and Australia jointly hosted a world cup, there were still lots of problems – like making sure that all nations got a decent crop of games.

London is quite good at hosting giant sporting events, though they have not yet finished the greatest test of them all – hosting the Olympics. Once that happens in 2012, I think it will show whether or not London, and indeed England are as good at hosting major sporting events as they think they are. I suppose that the Twenty20 Cricket World Cup and the world gymnastic championships will also help to prove that England is capable of at least sharing the Rugby World Cup with other nearby nations.
